St.Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas was a Roman Catholic bishop who helped the needy.Saint Nicholas also called Nikolaos of Myra.He was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey.

He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents. He lost both of his parents as a young man and reportedly used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. He later served as bishop of Myra, a city that is called now Demre.

During his lifetime he developed a reputation for gift-giving by putting coins in other people's shoes, which accounts for many of today's Christmas traditions that involve leaving gifts in shoes or boots.

The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th (December 19 on the Julian Calendar).

In America, St. Nicholas went through many transformations and eventually Sinter Klaas became Santa Claus.

He is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker.
